Brooklyn’s Wetland Gem is Back and Buzzing with Birds!
Goodbye, mud pit — hello, eco-paradise! 🎉 After a whopping $7 million makeover, Four Sparrow Marsh along Jamaica Bay is officially open to the public and looking fresher than a saltwater breeze. Once overlooked and overgrown, this three-acre wetland has been reborn as a vibrant haven for native grasses, fluttering sparrows (yes, the actual namesake birds!), and a chorus of chirping wildlife. 🌾🦜🌊
Engineers rolled up their sleeves and hauled out 9,000 tons of soil (😱), carefully reshaping the land to allow plants with different water needs to thrive while helping protect nearby neighborhoods from floods. They even fenced out the marsh’s most voracious visitors — hungry geese with a taste for fresh grass. “It’s like filet mignon to a goose,” joked ecologist John McLaughlin. 😂🍽️ But don’t worry — the fences are temporary. In just three years, this lush landscape will be goose-proof, flood-resistant, and fish-friendly — a natural nursery for Brooklyn’s finned and feathered friends alike. 🐟🌱🦆

Maimonides Health just cut the ribbon on its brand-new Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Department (CPEP) — and it's a total game-changer for South Brooklyn! Opening officially on August 5, this new space is nearly four times the size of the original psych ER and will offer 24/7 specialized care for patients in mental health crisis. Think private rooms, extended observation beds, in-unit showers, and more staff on-site — all designed to treat people with privacy, dignity, and compassion.
Funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and backed by Governor Hochul’s $1 billion statewide mental health initiative, this expansion couldn’t come at a better time. With youth depression and adult mental health diagnoses on the rise, the new CPEP will offer addiction services, crisis clinics, and even a mobile team — making Maimonides the only hospital in South Brooklyn with this level of mental health support. 🙌 A huge step forward for our community!
