🗽 Civic Spotlight: Keeping You Informed |
🚧 Southern Brooklyn Slams the Brakes: Vernikov Puts Community First in Bike Lane Pause 🚗🛑 |
Council Member Inna Vernikov is standing firm for Southern Brooklyn, successfully pushing the Department of Transportation to pause a long-planned rollout of painted bike lanes in Sheepshead Bay. While the project had been years in the making, Vernikov made it clear that the city can’t ignore the concerns of local residents who feel left out of the decision-making process. With congested roads, limited parking, and a unique neighborhood layout, many in the area felt that the bike lane plan was out of step with their day-to-day realities. 🚦🏙️ |
The proposed project would have added painted lanes on one-way streets like Dorchester Road, East 12th Street, East 13th Street, East 17th Street, and East 18th Street — as well as on one side of two-way roads including Cortelyou Road, Foster Avenue, Farragut Road, Avenue I, Avenue J, Avenue L, and Avenue M. Notably, none of the proposed bike lanes required the loss of any street parking — a frequent flashpoint in neighborhood debates. 🚲📏 |
Now, only the lanes on Farragut, Cortelyou, Foster, and Dorchester will move forward, with implementation scheduled to begin this summer. Rather than allow another one-size-fits-all policy to barrel through, Vernikov advocated for a more measured approach. The pause allows for additional community feedback and gives the city time to reassess how to implement infrastructure changes without disrupting the needs of drivers, families, and small businesses. While parts of the plan will continue in other sections, this move reinforces a key message: Brooklyn neighborhoods deserve a seat at the table — not just a line on the road. 🗺️🤝 |
🚗💥 “Super Speeders, Beware!” Senate Committee Greenlights Crackdown Bill 🛑🛣️ |
A bill targeting the speed demons of New York roads just zoomed through the Senate Transportation Committee — and it’s revving up to be one of the most talked-about safety proposals of the year. The Stop Super Speeders Act would slap a speed-limiting device onto any car driven by someone who racks up six or more camera-issued speeding tickets in a single year. No more Mario Kart on Ocean Parkway — reckless drivers would be forced to slow their roll. 🏎️➡️🐢 |
If passed, the bill could’ve prevented tragedies like the one in March where a driver with a mountain of violations killed a mother and her two children. Advocates say it’s a smarter alternative to license suspension — because let’s face it, people drive anyway. Speed-limiters let you keep your car, just without the street racing. 🛑💡 |
But the race isn’t over yet. The Assembly still needs to take the wheel, and with concerns about rural judges and installation costs, the road to passage is anything but smooth. Still, with growing momentum and support from top legislators, this bill might just cross the finish line — making New York’s streets safer for pedestrians, drivers, and everyone in between. 🏁🚶♀️🚴♂️ |
